Color Workshops
"However extraordinary it may seem, it remains a fact that the things one notices most are the things with which one is
familiar; it is very difficult to see new things, even when they are before our very eyes......and it is strange to think how blind
and deaf we must be to so many things around us ....."
                                                                              from
The nature of Light & Color in the open air by M. Minnaert

It is my hope that the workshops will help to sharpen the artists' awareness of unlimited nuances color in their everyday
experiences.   Each new discovery brings with it the promise of another when one is willing to make the journey, discarding
the tools that have become useless and finding new tools that are more suited to the explorer's needs.

I have redesigned the Color Workshops to focus primarily on Color, Value and Palette choices without the additional
exercises in line, shape and texture.

Workshops will be held upon request.

The following is a suggested schedule for a two day workshop.  Workshops may be customized to suit the needs of the
group scheduling the workshop.

Color Workshop: Saturday and Sunday
Instructor:  Chris Carter  - www.ChrisCarterArt.com

Time:  10 am to 4:30 pm      Bring a bag lunch – Bottomless cup of coffee provided as well as filtered water and an
assortment of teas.

Saturday Morning Session: Approximately 2 ½  hours

Additive (Light) & Subtractive (Pigment) Color Theory
Choosing a Limited Palette
The importance of a value scale for Lights, Shadows and Halftones

Lunch Break:

Saturday Afternoon Session:  Playing with color and value

Three hour painting session.  Plein aire or  Still Life

Materials Needed:

Whatever supplies you normally use to paint.  Bring several surfaces to paint on so that you can do multiple quick paintings
to warm up.

A portable easel.  I have several extra easels. If you don’t have a portable one, let me know.  I also have table if you
normally work on a table rather than an easel.

You may  work in any medium you choose, including collage ( bring your own papers, fabric, adhesives, inks, etc....... )

There is no need to purchase any new supplies.  One of the goals of the workshop is to learn to use the
materials you already have and to push them to their limits.

Sunday Session:

We will review the Saturday morning session and discuss the experiences of the afternoon painting session.  Following the
discussion we will continue to paint plein aire or still life, breaking for lunch whenever it is convenient.

Personal critique will be offered on portfolio work upon request.

Location:     125 Anthony Road, Glen Gardner, NJ  07830 or another location of choice.

Check directions on the internet.  I don’t actually live in Glen Gardner.  That is where my post office is.  I live in Lebanon
Township.  Please don’t confuse Lebanon Township with Lebanon Borough.  Use the above address to search directions,
and you’ll be fine.

Please feel free to email me with questions and to visit both my website and my blog to view my work.  My work is diverse,
both in medium and in style.  For me, painting is an exploration.  Each painting offers me the opportunity to learn something
new, to strengthen weaknesses and to open doors to new possibilities.  Mediums are unique in their strengths and
limitations. I like to know as much as I can about each so that I can choose the best one to suit my needs.
